Speed Reader — Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Speed Reader is a browser extension that displays the text of the page you are viewing one word at a time so you can read it faster. We take the simplest possible approach to privacy: the extension does not collect, transmit, or sell any data.

What the extension accesses

When — and only when — you activate Speed Reader (by clicking its toolbar icon or pressing its keyboard shortcut), it reads the text of the page in your current tab, or the text you have selected, in order to display it one word at a time. This text is processed entirely within your browser and is shown only to you. It is never sent to us or to any third party, and it is not stored after you close the reader.

What the extension stores

Your preferences — such as your words-per-minute setting and display options — are saved using your browser's storage API so they persist between sessions. This information stays in your browser (and, if you are signed in to your browser, syncs through your browser vendor's own sync service). We never receive it.

What we do NOT do

Permissions

The extension requests only activeTab (to read the page you explicitly activate it on), scripting (to show its reader interface on that page), and storage (to remember your settings). It requests no host permissions and runs on a page only when you start it.
